16 year old Frederick High School student Karmyn Bethel is an entrepreneur who recently started her own cooking and baking business. She started her business because she enjoys cooking and baking. As Karmyn stated, she wanted to share her talents with people in her school to satisfy their hunger. On her instagram account “Fredplated,” she posts her food to reach out to more future customers. She started her business at the start of the school year, so I asked Karmyn what her thoughts were on her business now compared to then and she said, “It’s going really well and I have a lot of sells compared to when I first started.”
Karmyn’s food consists of a variety of many things, she can make any type of food from finger foods to full plates and dishes, as well as sweet treats. Karmyn makes mini cakes, s’mores cookies and many chocolate covered treats such as, chocolate covered pretzels, chocolate covered oreos, and chocolate covered rice krispies. All of these food items range from prices of $2-$7.
Something I found unique about her business name Fredplated was that it came from the fact that she makes full dish plate meals and sells them at Frederick High School, which is also known as Fred. Some plate meals she makes are honey barbecue mac and cheese and broccoli, grilled smoked ribs and potato salad, honey hot glazed wings and stuffed potato, and empanadas con arroz y frijoles rojas. These meals could range at prices between $5-$7, but it really depends on your order.
Karmyn likes to think of herself as a perfectionist, so when cooking and baking she likes to seek perfection to please her customers based on their own personal liking. When asked about where she saw her business in the future, Karmyn described how she wanted to hopefully open up her own bakery or become a vendor.
Karmyn hopes that she can fulfill people’s cravings and leave them with a heart-warming taste of flavor, wanting them to come back for more. In addition, when asked for advice for someone else who is trying to become an entrepreneur, she said, “Don’t ever give up on something small, continue to increase! Make it bigger and better.”
