One important aspect of the high school experience is volunteering. When applying to colleges, volunteering and civil service is one thing that can really improve your chances. In addition to applications, volunteering, especially in a field you intend to work in, can help you gain important connections. Most importantly, volunteering is good for you. It can give you purpose and confidence and even improve your physical health. Here are some volunteering opportunities that Frederick High students can take part in.
Become a volunteer youth sports coach for the Frederick Parks and Recreation! If you are interested in sports. With nine options for sports in the Winter, Spring, and Fall, there is something for everyone. When you apply through Parks and Rec’s portal, you can choose flexible positions and availability. There is not a specific age limit shown on the organization’s website.
The Frederick Community Table, based in downtown Frederick, serves dinner every night to those in need. Volunteers set up, serve, and clean up meals from 4:30 to 7:00 every weeknight. You must be at least 16 years old to participate in this opportunity.
Centro Hispano is one of Frederick’s immigrant support centers. They have multiple different volunteer roles available. You have the option to be an English as a Second Language Teacher, Golden Years assistant, or a Bilingual Office Helper. English as a Second Language Teachers teach on weeknights from 6-7:30. Teachers plan lessons and teach mostly adult beginner English speakers. Golden Year’s is Centro Hispano’s elder immigrant enrichment program. Volunteering for this program would happen on Wednesday or Saturday from 9:00am-12:00pm. There is no specific age requirement posted.
Frederick County Public Libraries
With multiple locations all around Frederick County and flexible hours, becoming a library volunteer is a convenient opportunity. Volunteers are a big part of keeping the library functioning. If you love to read this is the perfect opportunity for you.
These are just a few of the many volunteering opportunities that are available in Frederick. Volunteering and giving back is important especially during high school. It’s a rewarding experience in itself that is also helpful during college applications or to have on a resume.
