Learning a second language has become more and more beneficial. There are social, professional, and mental benefits that make this a desirable skill. Here are just a few of many positives of learning a second language:
Job Opportunities
Knowing a second language can help improve job prospects. Many jobs that involve customer relations value knowing a second language as it can help with communication with customers. Miranda Martinez, a Sophomore at Frederick High who knows English and Spanish, said knowing two languages, “puts you in a better position” when it comes to job opportunities. Knowing a more widespread language such as Spanish is even more beneficial in this regard.
Communication with Family
Learning the language of your family can be very beneficial. Older generations of families could speak a different language, and being able to communicate with them can be fulfilling and meaningful. Miranda Martinez and Theron Correia, a Frederick High Senior, both speak languages that their extended families speak. Martinez said, “It’s a beautiful thing because it’s a part of who you are.” Both agree that this is an important aspect of their family dynamics.
Improve Skill in First Language
As you learn a second language you become aware of sentence structure, composition and grammar rules that you may have not been aware of in your first language. Becoming more conscious of the rules in your second language can improve speaking and comprehension in your first language.
Improves Memory
When you know two languages, having to switch between both means more word retrieval and memory skills used daily. Those who know two languages have better memory than those who only know one. This is simply due to the fact that you need to remember more information in order to be proficient in two languages.
Better Problem Solving
The skill of switching between languages can also improve problem solving skills. Having the mental practice and constant cognitive stimulation makes your brain faster and better at solving problems creatively.
Learning a second language is a skill that can improve your brain functioning as well as your day to day life. Knowing more common languages, such as Spanish, can even increase your job opportunities and make other activities much easier. Life is better if you have better communication skills!
