Have you ever seen a ghost?
From 1500 BCE to today, people have reported sightings of spirits. In each corner of the world people have their own chilling tales. So in honor of October, let’s share a few from our own state.
- Hood Colleges Haunted History.

Hood college posted a report on October 11th, 2021 about scary stories on their grounds that have been spread by students. Blurred apparitions, orbs of floating light, Noises of the dead, objects moving without interaction, they have all been reported by students and faculty on the school grounds.
The most known tale involves a student who was supposedly attacked in the basement of Meyran Hall while simply trying to do laundry. Legend says, she dragged her body through the halls, crawling up to the door of her dorm, inch by inch. Painstakingly, ever so slowly, making her way to her final destination.
After making it so far, almost into her dorm, she felt the life leave her and her vision blur to black. According to the students, a bloodstain was left on the carpet where she took one last desperate breath, and apparently reappears even when the carpet is replaced.

In Virginia Tech, ghost stories have spread around.
From the Collegiate Times, Robert Sebek and others have said the first ghost is a woman who can be heard shrieking from the lobby late at night. Not much is known about her origins, but she supposedly inhabits the apartments above the theater.
However, the second ghost is described as a construction worker who fell off a wall while the building was being built.
“We heard this story and thought we’ve heard that one a million times before. We didn’t really think it had any truth to it,” Sebek reportedly said.
Things got real, however, when a woman came into the theater one day and told Sebek and his coworkers her grandfather had in fact passed away by falling off a wall in that building.
- Prospect Hall Mansion, the Movie ‘Spirit’ taken literally?

You know the old horse movie, ‘Spirit’? At Prospect Hall in Frederick Maryland, the word spirit is taken in a literal sense. Rumor has it, George Washingtons horse, ‘Blue Boy,’ makes galloping noises late at night after sports practices when the school was still running.
On this note, apparently over 10 people have reported ghostly sightings in this area, the most famous being Agnes, an indentured servant girl with a sad love story.
Agnes was a servant who fell in love with the owner’s son, but when the boy left to go to boarding school, the owner had her bordered up into the walls. After being left there to rot, she apparently messed with electronics in the mansion and possibly was an “orb” on the ABC show back in the early 2000’s called “Real Scary Stories.”
These few stories are just a taste of the spirits in this state. Ghost stories are scattered through Maryland, some more believable than others. Infact, downtown has a whole ghost tour that will take you to some of the most haunted places in downtown Frederick. Maybe now, you’ll think twice about the chilling knocks on your window, or the creeps you get before walking through a door in this spooky city.
