As we look around in the new school year many things have changed, new teachers have arrived, policies have been modified, even how we get to clubs during Advocacy has been revised. Speaking of clubs, one in particular has had a major shift in its leadership moving into the 2024-25 school year. That club is the Asian Pacific Islander Association, or APA for short. I interviewed the new President, Ngun Len, to see what this school year entails.
Since joining the club Ngun has wanted to step up and take a more active role in the clubs management, last year Ngun was the vice president, behind Kelly Le, who has since graduated leaving the position open for Ngun to fill. When asked why APA was important to her, Ngun had this to say: “The club provides a place for members to learn about various Asian cultures and traditions while also building a community.”
Ngun’s passion for creating a welcoming space for students is clear, and she already has exciting plans for how she wants to lead the club this year. When asked about why she wanted this role she exclaimed, “It is a great opportunity to be in my position as I not only get to teach others about different Asian cultures but learn about them as well.” As Ngun steps into her role as President this school year she is excited to build new relationships, help connect the community, and improve her leadership skills.
Last year as a way to make learning about Asian culture fun and exciting, APA decided to have sushi and boba at Frederick High School’s international night. International night is an event held by the school as a showcase for different groups or clubs to display their culture. Another one of the big activities for APA is a dance that they choreograph themselves each year as a group initiative. Over 15 people participated during the fall pep rally to show off their dance. If you want to learn more about Asian culture or are simply interested in learning more about them, APA offers a safe space for people to celebrate their culture while also encouraging others to exchange traditions and build friendships.
