As students across the country are heading back to school, schools across the nation have come across a problem. Students in class with their phones. Multiple schools and school districts across the country are now starting to ban cell phone usage during class or banning the use of them at all in school. Teachers and administrators from Frederick High School have considered phone use in class being a major problem and distraction. After interviewing with teacher Mrs. Strakonsky this was her opinion on phone usage in class, “I do believe they should be banned during class, class should be a social time to talk with your other peers and friends. It is also a learning period where students should be engaged in class and participating.”
It is shown that social media also plays a big part in the distraction for students. Apps such as Tiktok, Instagram, and Snapchat have affected students socially by connecting with other friends and peers by messaging, creating videos/ pictures, and video calling through those apps, and not socializing with them in person on a regular basis.
A safety perspective can also be a problem. If there was an emergency at school or even at home, will the students be able to connect with their family back home? After interviewing a mother of an athlete who usually gets pulled out of school for sporting events, here is what she had to say, “I do believe that students should be able to have their phone on them and not be taken. Do I agree with using them during learning instruction? No I don’t, but if there is an emergency at home and I need to text my son or he needs to be pulled out of class because of basketball, I need him to [be aware] if something important.” When hearing all the different perspectives with teachers, should we ban phones in school?
