KNOWING YOURSELF WITHOUT REALLY KNOWING YOURSELF

Story continues below advertisement

Unwritten sonatas and sandless beaches

Go hand-in-hand

I cry without a sense of my own being

Writing mindless words onto a blank slate

Hoping to get the point across

Almost as if a piece of paper

Could be a form of dipping my feet

Into cold and unsettling waters

I love how speech is conveyed

And how people interpret art pieces

Just as much as I love to collect objects

Or listen to music while my lights are off

But love itself is stronger

And cannot be replaced by my untouched hobbies

I reach for my own heart

As I would for any book

And I pull into myself

My knees grazing against my chest

Acting as a bullet of comfortability

I blink

And block out all the noise

Keeping myself steady

I am a boat lost at sea

MAYFLOWERS

i sit in my bed as the sky rolls in / like a film set, the clouds pass as if being pushed by an unknown force / a smile lay against my face / i bask in the sun / it is may now, and i am the same girl i have always been / i watch the flowers bloom with an eerie stare / as if i had been anticipating this colorful change / consistent, bright change / a locket hangs from my neck / the metal cold against my skin / inside is everything i could care about / i hold it to my heart / i kiss my fingers / a thunderstorm brews in the west / i await the darker skies / the breeze tosses around my hair / i look majestic but i cannot see myself / i allow the confidence to wash over me / like a cold shower / my stance tightens and i grin wide / i feel new / as if something had changed all along

LIFE’S LITTLE INSTRUCTIONS

I sit quietly in a field

My legs stretched out

Grass tickling my calves

Tracing my sun-kissed skin

It is an ethereal feeling

On the final autumn day

Winter fastly approaching

I am excited

More than I should be

I think to myself

Humming a little tune

A smile plastered against my face—so huge and warm

It is grand to enjoy the little moments in life

Before time as you know it is gone

Sand resting at the bottom of your hourglass

My fingers tap against my knee

My nails had been freshly trimmed

Gnawed at by my intrusiveness

A fresh, not-too-bitter breeze blows my hair around

Leaving its fingerprints along my exposed skin

Nature is not always intimate

Nature is deadly and harsh

But, as I sit still

I allow this rare moment to consume me

My mind had shut off for a brief moment

And as I lie down, I am reminded of the little things

The small

Significant things

Such as the ring on my finger

Or the bracelet on my left wrist

The little things that life itself takes for granted

Me

You

The dying leaves

I pause

I remind myself to take lots of snapshots

Write little notes promptly

Use a favorite picture of a loved one as a bookmark

And most importantly

Believe in love at first sight
